Top Design: Project Garage
There are seven designers left. Tonight’s challenge was to build a 3D model of a garage for a family, based on their needs. The dad wanted a playroom for the kids and to able to get the car in the garage. The mom wanted storage and a workspace desk. The two girls wanted a stage and places to store their costumes. When asked what colors hey liked, they threw out all of them – red, blue, purple, yellow, etc.
From the models, the family would choose the winning design. That designer would be the team leader for the project and would receive immunity. Andrea was chose as the winning designer, although I really didn’t care much for it. I like Goil’s stage that rolled out of the garage better. Ryan insulted the family by suggesting they get rid of some stuff. They did have a bunch of junk in their garage, but that’s just not how you talk to clients.
With a $5,100 budget, the designers set out to redesign the garage. The family made a last minute change – deciding to put the desk in an attached shed rather than in the garage. Carisa was in charge of that and totally closed herself off there, not really helping the rest of the designers organize all the junk. The other designers really got onto her about not helping more. The judges told Andrea the family chose her’s as the best design, but they were not so sure. But, since she had immunity, she gets to stay. They also told Goil, Matt, and Eric they could stay. It came down to Ryan, Carisa, and Michael. Ryan – gasp – apologized to the judges for badmouthing interior design last week, but then kept on about how the family should have gotten rid of some of the stuff. The judges really didn’t like the grape colored curtains, saying they didn’t work in a garage. Andrea blamed Michael for picking the color, but he blamed her. Carisa was told she should have contributed more to the garage instead of focusing on the shed. The judges told Ryan, who was in charge of graphics, that the graphics didn’t really materialize, other than the tire tracks for the car.
The designer picked to leave was Ryan. He was kind of a punk all along – I didn’t like his attitude and he thought he was so artsy fartsy, but really, I was not impressed by anything I saw him design. In the end, he said the judges were conservative and uptight – whatever dude.

The judges were just looking for a reason to get rid of Ryan. Yes, his attitude was questionable but then again Carissa can be a bit of a pain and Michael has too many issues to list in a comment. Ryan did everything he could to help get that garage finished. He didn’t paint anything on the floor because of time. It wasn’t his job to do the overall decorating of the garage, that was Carissa’s. Carissa did nothing except the office to help get the garage finished. The challenge was to create a garage, not renovate a shed. And Michael – well, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a person so proud of curtains as he was last night.

I agree about Carissa – too bad the judges couldn’t have dumped both of them! Ryan did help, but he insulted the family by coldly suggesting they get rid of stuff. Yeah, I know they needed too, but he could have approached it more tactfully (something he seems to lack). Carissa just hid in the shed all day, doing nothing. At least Ryan did help clean the garage and organize it. I loved it when some judge (cannot remember who it was) said Michael had never met a shade of grape he didn’t love – LOL!
