Week 2 of Dancing with the Stars - Mambo and Quickstep

I think two words to sum up tonight’s episode of Dancing With the Stars would be “pretty good”.  After every routine tonight I had to say I thought the performance was at a minimum pretty good and sometimes just great.  I don’t think there was one celebrity that gave a performance you could describe as bad.  The female celebrities danced the Mambo, while the male celebrities danced the Quickstep.

Apolo and Julianne started off the show tonight.  Watching Apolo in his grey tails I though he looked stunning and I can see why he is considered a heart throb in the sport of speed skating.  He has a really good energy about him and is really likeable.  The judges agreed and described him as the surprise of the season so far.

Shandi and Brian were up next.  I think that Barbie and Ken is a great way to describe them.  Beautiful people, yes.  Good performance, not really.  She said in her behind the scene piece that she was uncomfortable being sexy in the dance and that really came across in her performance.  I thought she looked awkward and no where near sexy.

Clyde and Elena performed next.  I love Clyde.  Unfortunately I don’t know if he’ll be around for very long but I hope so.  His height seems like it might be an obstacle to winning the title.  I do love his personality and I think he gave a great performance tonight, but compared to some of the other stars I don’t think he is as strong a dancer.

Leeza and Tony danced next, and as I said last week I really like Leeza.  I can only hope that when I turn 50 I look as good as she does.  Hell, I’d love to look as good as she does right now at 35!  Her performance was really precise and fun, but I didn’t get any kind of sexy vibes from it.

Ian and Cheryl were next.  Ian seemed to be light on his feet, and I disagree with Bruno when he said he was too skippy and hoppy.  I thought he was great.  Yet again having Cheryl Burke as his partner is an advantage.  She is a great choreographer and really knows how to play up her partner’s strengths and she does know what it takes to win.

Paulina and Alec followed with their Mambo.  I thought the performance was good and really fun to watch, but I didn’t get sexy out of it.  Len said she was stiff and not raunchy.  I don’t think she needed to tramp it up too much, but a little sexy would have gone a long way.  She definitely has the looks for it – she just needs to relax a bit and show off the talent I think is in her for dancing.

Billy Ray and Karina performed next.  Carrie Ann said he was the most improved dancer from last week and that is so true.  Maybe he didn’t go into the show with the same competitive fire the other contestants had, but he has it now.  If he can perform every week the way he did tonight he has a good chance of going far, especially with his fan base.  This week (as he did last week) he had an awesome response from the fans in the audience.  I also think he looks more like a dancer with his hair off his face.  Carrie Ann also mentioned that.  It does make a difference, as appearance has a lot to do with ballroom dancing.

Heather and Jonathan were up next.  I was truly surprised by Heather’s performance.  I thought it was great.  Maybe it is because she is from the UK, but I just didn’t think she had it in her to do a great Mambo.  I was wrong.  Her performance was great, and her outfit was the best outfit of the show (I loved the pants).  I was also surprised by the fact that Jonathan has a hairy chest.  Why did I notice that?  I have no earthly idea.  I guess I just figured that a male ballroom dancer would wax his chest.  He definitely does not wax the chest, or didn’t have the time to get to the salon this week to do it.

John and Edyta performed next.  I really like him and I was surprised how good he performed.  Yes, I fell into the trap that because of his age he would have trouble with the Quickstep.  The judges also thought he sold his performance tonight.

The final two couples of the night were probably two of the best performances of the night (in my opinion).  Laila and Maksim were amazing in their Mambo.  I am surprised at how well she has performed these past two weeks.  To me boxing and dancing just don’t go together.  I might also be comparing her to Evander Holyfield during the first season of Dancing with the stars.  Joey and Kym were great.  The judges did not score them as high as I thought they deserved.  Joey was light on his feet and always seemed to be in control during the dance.  Sometimes the celebrities appear to be out of control during the Quickstep – not Joey.

Right now the favorites have to be Laila, Apolo, Joey, and Ian (once again because of his partner).  Who do I think has the greatest chance of being eliminated tomorrow?  Paulina, Leeza or Clyde.  Clyde might be safe because of his fan base of men, but I’m not too sure.  Tomorrow night at 9:00 p.m. is the results show.  There is a recap show at 8:00 p.m. but you won’t miss anything if you don’t tune in until 9.
