Week 4 of Dancing With The Stars - who picks this music anyway?

Something is happening this season on Dancing With The Stars.  I’m not sure if the celebrities are getting better or the judges are mellowing out, but there have been an awful lot of high scores given through four weeks of competition.  And before I talk about the performances tonight, was it me or did Carrie Ann take the grumpy old man pills tonight?  Usually it’s Len who seems to need a laxative, but tonight Carrie Ann was kind of cranky.  Maybe the crew changed seats without telling anyone and she was actually sitting in Len’s chair.  Also, what is it with the music selections?  To me a Paso Doble should be done to Spanish influenced music, and the only one we saw like that was Karina and Floyd’s.  I couldn’t even recognize the song Jennie and Derek danced to.

That aside, the couples did either the Viennese Waltz or the Paso Doble tonight.  Mark and Kym started off the evening with the Viennese Waltz.  The guy seems really like a hard worker, determined to succeed but I just don’t think he measures up to the rest of the celebrities left in the competition.  He seemed kind of stiff and rough in the dance.  The judges gave him some good scores and said it was his best dance to date but compared to everyone else he is lacking.  He did get a total of 22, the lowest score of the evening.

Sabrina and Mark were up next with a Paso Doble to “You Spin Me Round” by Dead or Alive.  At first all I could think about was Adam Sandler in The Wedding Singer.  (What a great movie, but I digress.)  After I got over that I really enjoyed their dance.  She is very determined and focused and I think she’s out to prove the judges wrong.  Even cranky old Len said he couldn’t find anything wrong with her performance and they received a perfect score of 30.

Jane and Tony danced the Viennese Waltz next.  She’s very pretty and the dance was nice but….I don’t know, I guess there was something missing in it for me.  I’m not sure what that was, but something.  Carrie Ann and Tony got into it about whether or not he lifted Jane.  I know there are rules about that but it wasn’t like he did some crazy, wild type lift, he just lifted her ever so slightly from the ground.  I think in a fight I’d put my money on Tony.  They got a total of 26 (Carrie Ann knocked a point off her score for the lift).

Floyd and Karina performed their Paso Doble next.  I thought he was great, trying to do that jump that the men do in the dance.  Yet again Carrie Ann is on them about a so-called lift and marked a point off her score because of it.  Bruno called her the Stasi, which I think was hysterical.  They got a total of 23.

Mel and Maks were up next with a Viennese Waltz.  The judges liked them, and the men seemed to be more impressed than Carrie Ann.  She said that when Mel opened her mouth she was like a truck driver, but then backs down and says “but in a good way”.  OK, that’s the way to make friends and influence people.  They got a total of 26 from the judges.

Cameron and Edyta danced next, doing a Paso Doble to the Superman theme.  Edyta even said that the music was unusual.  Unusual?  That’s a nice way of saying Hello, what the hell are you thinking with this song selection?  How about a nice traditional Spanish song?  However, Cameron was on his game and gave an awesome performance.  Did he look like he recently had a spray tan or was it just my television set?  The judges gave them 9’s straight across the board.  Finally Cameron is getting some of the recognition he deserves!

Marie and Jonathan were the next couple, performing a Viennese Waltz.  OK, what was it with her costume?  Did she have enough fur / feather trim on it?  I certainly hope no animals were hurt in the making of the costume.  It was a nice performance that seemed to go by way too quickly.  I guess that is a good time, because sometimes it seems as if the dances go on and on and on……..They got a score of 26 from the judges.

Jennie and Derek performed their Paso Doble next.  OK, first I have no idea what the song was and that just threw me off to start.  Also, I just didn’t feel it.  I don’t know why, but I thought I was watching a completely different performance than the judges.  They got a perfect 10 from Len (hello, is this the same Len Goodman we all know and despise), but only an 8 from Carrie Ann because of the dreaded lift again.  They ended up with a score of 27.

Helio and Julianne finished up the evening with a Viennese Waltz and I think that the best was saved for last.  OK, the second best since Sabrina got a perfect 10 but I thought Helio and Julianne came pretty close.  They did an amazing dance to the Goo Goo Dolls’ song Iris.  The judges gave them 27 and I think they might have just worn out their higher scoring paddles earlier in the night.

I think that the bottom two this week will probably be Mark and Floyd.  I think Floyd is going to be the one sent packing.

I agree wholeheartedly with your comments about the music. When you do a Latin dance, you should have Latin music; and when you do a waltz, well, anybody ever heard of Strauss?
