Wesley is eliminated on Project Runway

Did you ever wonder when a reality competition show has run out of things to do, or perhaps is scraping the bottom of the barrel?  Last week the season premier of Project Runway had the designers repeating the same challenge from season 1.  This week it was a twist that I thought seemed like a bit of a stretch.

The designers meet Heidi at the runway and she brings out the models for selection.  After everyone has their models she brings them back out.  Now the savvy PR fan knows that something is up.  Heidi tells the designers that their challenge this week will be to design a cocktail dress for their model, who is also their client.  As always Tim Gunn will give the details in the workroom.

The twist: a Project Runway first – the models will do the shopping for the fabric.  They have a budget of $75 to purchase green fabrics to make the dresses.  As the models are leaving the workroom some of the designers are yelling instructions like don’t forget the fasteners, buy some elastic.  I find it surprising that no one yelled something like “be sure to buy enough fabric so your booty won’t be hanging out on the runway.”

Most of the designers are not happy with the fabric purchases.  Some of the models bought too little fabric, some of them had odd color choices, while others purchased fabric inappropriate for a cocktail dress.  The designers had until midnight that day to finish the dress.

During his walk through Tim scares a few people (like Korto) when he thought her dress was on the mannequin inside out and then she says no, that’s the outside…..and then Tim is speechless for about 20 seconds and you can see the wheels turning in his head like he didn’t get it.  After his walk through he tells the designers that he has a few announcements.  No immunity will be granted this week since the winning dress will be manufactured and sold by Bluefly.com.  Also, there will be a famous young actress as the guest judge, but they would have to wait until the runway show to find out who that is.  The guest judge turned out to be Natalie Portman.  Besides being an Oscar nominated actress, she is an environmental activist and recently started her own line of “green” shoes.

The judges liked the dresses created by Kenly, Stella and Suede.  They thought that Kenley’s dress was elegant and streamlined.  They thought that Stella’s dress was biker chick chic, a difficult thing to do, and that her dress truly reflected who she is as a designer.  Suede’s dress was fun, young, unique and special.  Natalie said she would love to wear it while Heidi said if she was ten years younger she’d wear it too.  In the end it was Suede who was named the winner, and his dress will be sold on Bluefly.com

The bottom three designers were Korto, Wesley and Leanne.  The judges thought that Korto’s dress was off balance and that it looked like it had fins.  Wesley’s dress was way too short, tiny and shiny and in Nina Garcia’s words this made it look cheap.  Leanne’s dress was way too complicated – she had about five dresses in one and needed to learn the art and skill of editing her designs.

The bottom two designers ended up being Wesley and Leanne.  In the end it was Wesley who was eliminated.
