What is the Cha Cha Dance
The Cha Cha dance is one of many offshoots that sprang from the Mambo. Slower mambo music caused dancers to alter their steps slightly, since the difference was so distinct. At first they referred to this modified dance as the Triple Mambo. Today, it is one of the most popular and recognizable dances. You can always recognize it by its catchy rhythm that is frequently known even to non-dancers. “Step, step, cha cha cha”.
The Cha Cha is danced to almost any type of Latin music. It was originally designed for the classic Latin style with its particular movements, but like any dance it has been adapted to fit the times. Now you can use the Cha Cha for modern Latin rock or pop, though you have to change it up a little bit. There are many different styles for different songs and occasions, and you should try to be observant enough to develop instincts for which one to use.
The footwork of the Cha Cha is simple, and focuses mostly on just shifting your weight from foot to foot as you move. You can get away with a simple 10-step set of movements. On the 1st count, start with your right foot side. On the 2nd count, put your left foot forward and place weight on your left side. On the 3rd step, change your weight to your right side. Now you restart, but reverse the sides. Change your weight to your left side, put your right foot back, change your weight to your left side. Now you just have to start back on step 1.
The steps of the Cha Cha are certainly not a challenge to memorize. The challenge you will face when learning it is to keep your count as you go. Many beginners will forget what they are doing and misstep, which throws the groove off and takes a while to get back in good form. To properly learn the steps, you should practice extensively before you go to an actual dance. You should also remember small details about the technique, such as how you should shift your weight (the ball of your foot should be the first to hit the ground, and the first to leave it).
The Cha Cha is a fun and simple dance, and if you plan to attend many dances in the future, it is almost mandatory to learn. So take lessons or watch an instructional video today, and get this dance mastered.
