What’s up with the judges on DWTS as the celebs perform the Waltz or Paso Doble

What is going on with the judges on Dancing With The Stars?  Len Goodman starts out tonight’s show by giving crap to the dancers for not working as hard as the contestants who were on the show last season.  There’s the way to get the contestants motivated Len.  Near the middle of the show Clyde accused the judges of having well rehearsed lines.  I think he might be right.  For the most part the judges on Dancing With The Stars might have been critical, but were never mean.  Len is coming dangerously close to Simon Cowell territory with some of his criticisms.

Now to the dancing tonight – the celebs were either going to dance a waltz or the paso doble.  Overall I think the couples who did the waltz had better performances than the couples who did the paso doble.  I think (for me at least) a lot of my disappointment with the paso doble had to do with the music choices made by the producers.  Personally I don’t associate Bon Jovi with the paso doble, I prefer music with a Spanish flair.  There were many performances where I just could not get past the music selection.

Laila and Maks were up first with their paso doble.  The music sounded like it belonged in a carnival.  I thought they did a pretty good job, but I had such a hard time getting past the music to watch their performances.  The judges said they thought Laila had no fire, passion or aggression (and I disagree to some extent, I thought she was pretty good).

Apolo and Julianne had the first (and best) waltz of the evening.  I thought it was really smooth and beautiful.  Carrie Ann said Apolo has gone from sloppy to sophisticated and she is right on with that description. His gold medal winning competitive spirit is in high gear.  While everyone on the show wants to win, Apolo knows what it feels like to win the highest prize and what it takes to get there.  Don’t count him out – I think he could be the champion this year based on his competitive desire (and his talent doesn’t hurt either).

Leeza and Tony performed a paso doble to Bon Jovi.  Leeza looked awesome – I can’t believe she is 50 years old.  I would have liked to see Tony in full leather pants (not just leather trimmed pants)….merely a suggestion for the costume designers….and I’m sure I’m not the only one out there who would like to see him in them!

Ian and Cheryl performed their waltz next.  It was a good performance, but nothing special for me.  Cheryl looked great in the hair extensions – it was hard to recognize her at first because she looked so different.

John and Edyta followed with their paso doble.  Again with the music – I just couldn’t get the sense that it was a paso because the music was so strange to me.  It was kind of boring to me, which is surprising because the past few weeks John gave a great performance.  The judges were right when they said this dance didn’t suit him.  I think he would have been better in a waltz.

Clyde and Elena were next.  The judges went up one side of Clyde and down the other, criticizing him mercilessly.  OK, Elena did say that Clyde wasn’t working hard enough, but how much work is enough work?  I don’t know what other kind of commitments this guy might have on his plate.  It was so great watching him give it right back to the judges.

Billy Ray and Karina were next.  I can’t believe that he made her cry.  Bad Billy Ray, bad.  The music didn’t do anything for me.  He looked like he tried really hard in his performance and the judges agreed that he gave a good effort, but I just don’t think he is as skilled or talented as some of the other celebrities.

Heather and Jonathan had the final waltz of the night.  It was a good dance, but like the performance of Ian and Cheryl it was nothing special to me.  The judges did really like her though and said she was lucky to have Jonathan as a partner.  I agree – he seems like an awesome guy and a great dancer.

Joey and Kym finished the night with the performance of the evening.  To me it was the best paso doble overall.  The music actually had a Spanish flair which gave it credibility to me.  He just went all out to give a good performance without any gimmicks.  It worked –he got the first perfect score of the season.

Tomorrow night Big and Rich are going to perform on the results show, along with a surprise guest.  Who wants to bet that the surprise guest is Drew Lachey and that he and Cheryl will perform their freestyle routine to “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy”?  Either that or ABC has no idea who else they are going to get to fill up a bloated hour long results show.

I agree with your comments on the music; if you are going to do a dance with a Spanish influence, such as the paso or the tango, for pity’s sake use Spanish music. I mean how hard can it be; we get Spanish inserts in our phone bills – give us the music too!
