ESPN Reality Shows
Reality television exists even in the sports world. ESPN offers several reality shows, all centered, of course on sports and athletics. Some of the shows even feature professional athletes competing against each other.
NBA Live: Bring It Home - "NBA Live: Bring It Home" is a reality series on ESPN in which the best players of EA's video game "NBA LIVE 07" compete against each other. The eight players will vie for a cash prize of $100,000 as well as bragging rights.
The show is hosted by columnist Scoop Jackson and will also have appearances by NBA pros such as Carmelo Anthony, Baron Davis, and Vince Carter. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who recently did a stint on Dancing with the Stars, will also make an appearance.
Varsity Inc. (ESPN 2) - "Varsity Inc." focuses on the 2007 football season of the Louisiana high school team, the West Monroe Rebels. The Rebels draw almost 14,000 fans a game. Over the past 14 years, they have won six state championships and two national titles. West Monroe has produced two NFL players - Bradie James, a linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys and Andrew Whitworth, an offensive guard for the Cincinnati Bengals.
The show focuses on the lives of the coach and team and delves into how football touches many different aspects of their lives.
American Gladiators (ESPN Classic) - "American Gladiators" is a competitive series that pits the show's Gladiators against contestants. Each show, the Gladiators and contestants compete in events that test both their strength and agility. Events included the Assault, the Joust, Breakthrough and Conquer, Powerball, and The Wall. The winner is awarded a cash prize, which varied through the years.
The show originally began airing in 1989 and reruns are shown on ESPN. The show features both male and female contestants going up against some of the Gladiators America has come to know and love such as Nitro (Dan Clark), Diamond (Erika Andersch), Siren (Shelley Beattie), Turbo (Galen Tomlinson), and Laser (Jim Starr).
Battle of the Gridiron Stars - This is a show in which NFL football players from the American Football Conference (the Americans) go up against those from the National Football Conference (the Nationals). Archie Manning is the coach of the National team and Ken Stabler is the coach of the American team. The players compete against each other in events such as basketball, bowling, and soccer. They also run through an obstacle course, hit in a home run derby, and have a tug of war match. The show is filmed at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Florida.
